Authorities have specifically warned against entering flood-prone areas, valleys and wadis, where water levels can rise suddenly. Visiting beaches or venturing into the sea during unstable weather is also strongly discouraged due to rough conditions.
Heavy penalties
Violating safety rules during rainy conditions can result in significant fines and penalties. Entering flooded wadis is considered one of the most serious offences, carrying a fine of Dh2,000, 23 black points and a 60-day vehicle impoundment.
Gathering near valleys or flood zones can result in a Dh1,000 fine and six black points, while obstructing emergency personnel or rescue teams carries a Dh1,000 fine, four black points and possible vehicle impoundment.
Dangerous driving, including speeding in rainy conditions, is also penalised with a Dh2,000 fine, 23 black points and vehicle impoundment.
Driving offences
Additional violations during adverse weather include distracted driving and improper use of vehicle features. Taking photos or videos while driving can lead to a Dh800 fine and four black points.
Using hazard lights incorrectly while driving carries a Dh500 fine and four black points, while failing to follow instructions from authorities results in a Dh400 fine and four black points.
Officials stress that such behaviours not only violate regulations but also increase the risk of accidents during already hazardous conditions.
Real incidents
Recent incidents highlight the dangers of ignoring safety guidelines. In Fujairah, a motorist narrowly escaped injury after exiting his vehicle before it was swept away by flash floodwaters in a wadi.
Authorities stated that such situations can escalate within moments, turning a seemingly manageable scenario into a life-threatening emergency. These incidents reinforce the importance of complying with safety advisories.
What residents need to know
Authorities have issued extensive guidance to help residents stay safe. Key recommendations include:
- Avoid driving through water accumulation
- Stay away from electrical poles and trees
- Do not allow children to play in flooded areas
